Fryer on Football: Previews and predictions for the first-round playoff games - Orange County Register

By Google News Sports ·

Previews of the top high football playoff games in Orange County this week. The teams are listed by their ranking in the Orange County Top 25.

No. 14 Tustin (6-4) vs. San Juan Hills (8-2)

Where, when: San Juan Hills High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Analysis: Tustin and San Juan Hills both play in outstanding leagues, which is excellent preparation for this Division 2 playoff game. Tustin tied for fourth place in the Bravo League with a 2-3 league record. The Tillers finished strong. They beat Capistrano Valley last week, 21-7, although the Cougars were without injured star quarterback Talon Spencer. Tustin, which has not won a CIF-SS playoff game since 2016, has a boatload of talent, including BYU-committed senior defensive tackle Jeremiah Williams and Oklahoma-committed senior linebacker Taven Epps. San Juan Hills finished second to Mission Viejo in the Alpha League with a 4-1 league record. The Stallions lost a wild one to Mission Viejo last week, 54-44. San Juan Hills had to turn to their backup quarterback, Parker Armstrong. He played well, completing 30 of 40 passes against Mission Viejo’s very good defense for 381 yards and four touchdowns. San Juan Hills’ Luke Frith could be an All-Orange County selection on offense or defense. Cooper Chila is another standout receiver for the Stallions. If the game comes down to a field goal, San Juan Hills is good there, too. Stallions senior Trevor Koko has made eight of his nine field-goal attempts, including a successful 44-yarder. San Juan Hills’ offensive performance against Mission Viejo showed that it’s going to be difficult for Tustin to keep up in this one.

No. 15 El Modena (9-1) vs. No. 21 Newport Harbor (8-2)

Where, when: Newport Harbor High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Analysis: This Division 3 playoff game looks very evenly matched…
