Geely plans global rollout of i-HEV intelligent hybrid - Automotive World

Redundant power sources and AI energy control show Geely investing in full hybrids as a lasting pillar of its powertrain range

Geely Auto Group has unveiled its i-HEV intelligent hybrid system, challenging a full hybrid segment long shaped by Toyota. Pairing AI-controlled energy management with up to 230 kW of electric drive, the setup underpins an Emgrand i-HEV that returned 2.22 L/100 km in a test recognised by Guinness World Records.

Geely says the engine turns a peak 48.41% of its fuel’s energy into useful work, the best figure among mass-produced engines. Engine and motors can operate separately, letting electric power lead when conditions allow.

On the worldwide harmonised light vehicles test cycle, electric drive covers over 80% of driving time, according to Geely. The car can run without the engine at up to 66 km/h, and power arrives within 10 milliseconds of demand.

Its AI software splits the load between engine and motors to suit road conditions, improving overall energy use by more than 10%. A patented redundancy layout keeps the P1 and P3 motors and the engine independent, so the car can keep moving if one source fails.

The Xingyue L, Boyue L and Preface L Plus are among the models adopting the system, and the forthcoming Xingyue L Plus will debut a 2.0TD version pairing a 160 kW engine with a 230 kW P3 motor. Geely plans a phased global rollout, aimed at buyers in markets with thin charging networks who want lower fuel bills without plugging in.
