OpenAI Wants to Rebrand AI Data Centers, Use Them to 'Protect the Grid' - Yahoo Finance

By Google News AI ·

OpenAI wants its massive AI data centers to help keep the lights on when electricity grids come under pressure. And, apparently, it would also prefer that people stop calling them AI data centers.

The ChatGPT developer announced its Grid Protectors Program on Monday, a national initiative designed to let future AI facilities reduce electricity consumption during emergencies and periods of high demand, potentially lowering costs for other customers.

Under the plan, OpenAI would coordinate with utility companies to determine how much electricity its facilities could temporarily stop using, how quickly they could respond, and for how long. The company is also exploring on-site batteries and power generation to help manage demand.

"Families and small businesses should not be asked to subsidize a compute campus's electricity needs," OpenAI said in its announcement.

The program addresses one of the biggest complaints surrounding the AI infrastructure boom: companies are building increasingly power-hungry facilities while residents worry about paying higher—and water—electricity bills to support them.

OpenAI is using a planned facility in Effingham County, Georgia, as its first example. The company has signed a 25-year agreement with Georgia Power covering approximately 3,200 megawatts of electricity demand, with up to 1,000 megawatts available for temporary reductions during periods of high demand.

Under the approved agreement, OpenAI must cover the full infrastructure costs required to serve its facility, rather than passing those expenses on to existing customers.

Georgia Power also projects approximately $950 million in annual customer savings beginning in 2029, equivalent to at least $15 per month for a typical residential customer. However, those estimates cover…
