Terrific fantasy RPG Queen's Domain gets first proper update, adding a new throwing weapon and options to make puzzles "less frustrating" - Rock Paper Shotgun

By Google News Technology ·

Extremely good King's Field-style RPG Queen's Domain – or is it a Metroid Prime homage? Or a stealth Morrowind-up? We hacks simply cannot decide – has received its first proper patch, adding a hitherto "missing" throwing weapon, the Grave Knife, alongside a bunch of quality-of-life fixes.

They've stirred in the ability to disable screenshake, alongside some new icons to make status effects more obvious. They've also introduced "options to make some late game puzzles less frustrating", though they don't specify which. How frustrating! Still, it's a tidy overhaul for a game that has rapidly become one of my 2026 favourites.

The big mystery with the update is what the new Grave Knife does. You'll find it inside the Tower of Knowledge, once you've managed to unlock passage. As for those overly aggravating late game puzzles – I find the toughest part of puzzling in Queen's Domain is often just spotting switches and key objects, so perhaps it's something to do with that?

True, there's a large selection of skeleton tableaus who comically point the way to your next objectives, but the game's pixel aesthetics can be rather dense. I very much approve of this on the whole. I like how organic and tumbledown the environment feels - the repeated delight of realising that, yes, you can get over there, and wow, there's a whole other level down here.

Queen's Domain has earned a lot of happy reactions, and is a solid commercial hit. Developers Freshly Baked say it has sold over 100,000 copies, with Vertical Slice reporting that they've already broken even. Glad tidings indeed. Find the full patch notes below, via Steam.
