WAYNE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - One Laurel County woman faces a felony charge after police say she strangled a high school football player during a game last week in Wayne County.
According to the Monticello Police Department, officers were dispatched Oct. 30 to the Wayne County Hospital emergency room for an assault report. Police met with a Wayne County football player who was being treated for injuries sustained during the team’s matchup against North Laurel High School.
Investigators determined that a female spectator came up behind the student-athlete and strangled him during the game.
With assistance from Kentucky State Police, authorities identified the suspect as Kayla Barrett, 36, of East Bernstadt.
Monticello police filed a criminal complaint in Wayne District Court, leading to an arrest warrant. Troopers took Barrett into custody on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Barrett was taken to the Laurel County Detention Center and charged with second-degree strangulation.
“High school athletics should be an environment where student-athletes can compete safely, without fear of violence or intimidation,” the Monticello Police Department said in a statement. “While emotions can run high during competitive sporting events, there is absolutely no justification for physical violence against players, coaches, officials, or spectators.”
